At 3,812 meters, Lake Titicaca is a different Peru altogether — the light, the silence, and communities that still live much as they have for centuries. I take travelers beyond the standard half-day Uros Islands stop to include a night with a local family on Amantani or Taquile, which is where this destination really earns a place on an itinerary rather than being a quick add-on.

Uros is a visit of a few hours. It is not a life with the people who maintain the reed islands, and I will not sell it as one. Taquile asks for more time: the island is walked, and the textile tradition is the reason UNESCO recognized it. Amantani overnight is simple. It replaces a hotel night. It is respectful when it is wanted, and it is the wrong choice when someone in the party needs a proper bed at this altitude. Say which you are.
Best way to reach Lake Titicaca
Most travelers come from Cusco. The road takes about 10 hours. PeruRail runs a scenic train between Cusco and Puno on selected days; it also takes most of the day, with time at the high pass of La Raya, so it is a journey rather than a shortcut. Others fly into Juliaca, about 45 minutes from Puno. I plan the route based on how much of the Andean altiplano you want to see along the way.
Both the road and the train cross a pass higher than Cusco. This is a poor day to add a hike, and a poor first night of the whole trip. You should already have slept in the Sacred Valley or Cusco. Families and anyone who feels altitude quickly often do better leaving the lake off a short itinerary. I would rather tell you that than add a day you spend in the hotel.
