A Private Family Tour of Peru, Paced for Your Children

By Francisco Arriz Barrantes · Founder, TravizPeru · APOTUR Certified AP030-11

The reason to take a private family tour of Peru is not a longer list of ruins. It is a car that can stop, a guide who is yours, and a day that gets shorter when someone needs it to.

I'm Francisco Arriz Barrantes, in Lima. APOTUR certified, code AP030-11. I have planned private trips here for over 22 years, including plenty with children who were done with terraces by noon. That is useful information. I use it.

Altitude is the real constraint

Cusco sits at about 3,400 meters. The Sacred Valley towns where I like families to sleep the first highland nights sit roughly 600 meters lower, on the valley floor. Machu Picchu is about 2,430 meters, and many children feel better there than they did in Cusco. Lake Titicaca is 3,812 meters. I rarely make Puno the first night, and with younger children I often leave the lake off the trip.

I am not a doctor. If anyone in the family has a heart or lung condition, or a history of trouble at altitude, ask their physician before you book the high cities. I can shape the route around a cautious answer. I cannot give you the medical one.

Machu Picchu with children

The citadel visit is a walked circuit on a defined path. It is not a climb, unless you add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. Those are steep, the permits are limited, and they are usually the wrong add-on for younger children. We decide from the ages in front of us. I will not quote an age cutoff on this page that the ticket office can change.

Every person needs a train seat. PeruRail and Inca Rail both run the line from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, and I book the family on the same service. The official ticket and a passport check apply at the gate. A same-day dash from Cusco is the version children remember as a bus ride. Sleeping in the valley, then in Aguas Calientes, is the version they remember as the ruins.

The detail of circuits and seasons is on the Machu Picchu page and the private tour.

How long, and what the days feel like

Ten days is comfortable when you want Lima and the Andes and you are willing to look at the lake. The outline is the 10-day itinerary, with Day 4 and the dawn train softened. If the youngest traveler has a short fuse, stop after Machu Picchu. A well-paced week beats a complete one that ends in a meltdown at the Juliaca airport.

Parents ask me whether the country is safe before they ask me about hotels. I answered that, with the rail situation included, in is Peru safe to visit in 2026.
